Pennsylvania Progressive Insurance – Progressive Preferred Car Insurance Program
How to shop and save on insurance while staying protected
Did you know that shopping around can save you money on your car and home owners insurance? Insurance is meant to protect you, your family, and your assets, but that doesn’t mean it should cost more than it absolutely has to.
Shopping around — comparing coverages, services, and rates from different companies — is quick and easy with the help of Florey Insurance Agency Inc.
Many people consult an insurance agent or broker for their car insurance needs, and for good reason: agents can help you navigate the complicated world of insurance and help you get the best deal while ensuring that you are fully protected. But many people don’t know that there are different kinds of insurance agents and brokers.
Here’s the difference:
Captive Agents represent just one insurance company. As part of their business agreement, they offer only that company’s products, services, and coverages.
Independent agents and brokers offer products from different companies. Often, they can offer more choices and savings because they can review multiple options to find the right mix of companies, coverages, and rates for you. So rather than spending hours gathering quotes from various companies, you can get it done with one simple call or visit.
Now that you know about the different agent options available to you, it’s time to talk about what to keep in mind when shopping around. Following are three questions Pennsylvania insurance agent Lee Jamison recommends asking when shopping for your next insurance policy:
1. Is your policy up to date?
If you’ve recently moved, gotten married, had children, purchased a new car, or if it has been at least three years since your last driving violation, you may be eligible for discounts on your car insurance. These types of life changes may qualify you for lower rates and other special offers.
Also, do you own a home or condominium? Many home values have decreased in the last year — make sure you are not over insuring it. Re-evaluate your home owners policy every year and make sure your monthly mortgage payment is for its actual value instead of an inflated value.
2. Do you have too much or not enough coverage?
Periodically sit down and analyze your budget and the level of coverage you really need. If you or a member of your family drives an older or less expensive car, you may not need the same amount of coverage as a newer or more expensive car — consider dropping Comprehensive or Collision coverage. It could save you hundreds of dollars each year. If you have a lot of assets to protect, like a home or condominium, specialty vehicles like a boat, RV, or motorcycle, or things like a college fund or retirement savings — you might want to consider a Personal Umbrella policy. It can protect you and your family by covering claims that exceed the liability limits of your existing car or home owners policy.
3. Are you paying too much for your current policies?
Many people don’t realize how much insurance rates can vary from company to company and the difference shopping around can make to your bottom line. In fact, last year, people who switched to Progressive and saved reported saving an average of $550 on their annual premium.
Shop around to compare rates, and look at things like your deductible because raising your deductible can save you money too. According to the Insurance Information Institute, raising your deductible to $500 could reduce your Collision and Comprehensive costs by 15 to 30 percent. And for people with home owners insurance, if you can afford to raise your deductible to $1,000, you may be able to save as much as 25 percent.
“Shopping around to compare insurance rates, products, and services can be confusing but we can help,” said Lee Jamison, Florey Insurance Agency Inc. “We can answer your questions and help you compare rates and services from different companies so you can have peace of mind that you’re making an informed decision.”
